Here's why the Cybertruck may have dual (stereo) rear cameras...

Tesla Cybertruck prototype is equipped with a cryptic stereo rear camera setup

The Tesla Cybertruck is the electric car maker’s boldest vehicle yet, with its unapologetic XY design and intimidating stance. Images of the all-electric pickup snapped during its appearance at the Petersen Automotive Museum all but highlighted this point. As more pictures of the Cybertruck made their way online, it soon became evident that the all-electric pickup truck, or at least its prototype, was equipped with a rather unique rear camera setup.

Tesla’s vehicles today — the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y — are all equipped with a suite of eight cameras. All of these vehicles feature the same setup: three pointing in front, four in the sides, and one in the rear. The Cybertruck, however, seems different, as it features a stereo rear camera setup. This was highlighted in a photo shared on the r/TeslaMotors subreddit by Tesla community member u/The-Allstater.

Granted, the Cybertruck in the Petersen Automotive Museum is only a prototype, which means that aspects of the vehicle could still change. Despite this, it is nevertheless interesting to speculate the purpose behind the all-electric pickup truck’s stereo cameras. Such a setup, after all, has several potential uses.

Members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit shared some of their speculations about the Cybertruck’s stereo camera, with some suggesting that the dual sensor setup could be used to provide depth perception of objects that are attached to the truck, such as a trailer hitch. Others suggested that the second camera could be used as a rear view mirror, which would definitely be useful when the vehicle’s tonneau cover is closed.

I've been really curious about the camera placement for the rear-view mirror. I had expected it to be rear facing up by the upper laser blade location. See the picture below.

The issue with this location is that anything on top of the vault would obstruct the view. So now we see the cameras down by the plate. The issue here is that ANY trailer would completely block the rear-view mirror.

Maybe you can switch between views as needed???

There are images on the web which show two cameras in the front fender flare on each side. Speculation is this is where the side mirror cameras are. I guess they should just be called side view cameras?

Nah, I'm talking about the camera for the rearview mirror.

I suppose dual rearview cameras would allow 3D image generation. It might be a cool feature.

I am betting these will be for helping with backing up / trailer hitching. I doubt this is the rear view camera as it would be blinded by any vehicle with headlights on.

I know this is for the US market, but I am wondering if this placement is a very bad idea. European license plates are far bigger than US ones. So if you ever go overseas (like many of our service men and women do) and take your truck these would potentially be covered up.

Also (yes i know its a prototype) where would you mount your US license plate? There is no holders/screws in this configuration :)

Is it possibly glass/acylic that the license plate can be mounted behind? Euro plates are longer but shorter, maybe they fit under cameras?

Some states have laws about any cover on license plates.

With depth perception from two cameras and auto pilot it should be able to perfectly back a ball hitch under the tongue of your trailer. No inching yourself back, getting out to check, get back in and inch back (oops turned the wheel the wrong way, let me fix that, oops too far), getting out to check again. The cybertruck self hitching feature, fully automated when paired with a Tesla trailer?

Maybe it's just a plain old back up camera. Tho stereo vision would help it to self park.

You do not need holders or screws. I guess it is a monochrome display there, where license plate should be. DMV will program them via CT computer and they will appear on this display. Take a closer look at this area and you will see what i am talking about. It already displays CYBRTRK with state and registration dates
