In a letter to the California Air and Resources Board (dated Dec 9) Tesla states:

"While we have not yet begun production of the Cybertruck, we expect it to have a towing capacity of 7,500-14,000+ lbs., and it should very likely qualify as a 'Class 2B-3 medium-duty vehicle.'"

This statement tells us the Cybertruck's expected gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) will be between 8,501-10,000 lbs as that is the weight range of Class 2B medium duty pickups.

GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is defined as: the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers.

Other 2B medium duty pickups on the market include the Ford F-250, Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and the Ram 2500. This means that the pickup which the Cybertruck has been compared to most - the Ford F-150 will not be the Cybertruck's direct competitor, at least by class designation.

For comparison, here are the specs of the Cybertruck, F-250, Ram 2500 and Silverado 2500:

Cybertruck
Max payload: 3,500 lbs
Max tow rating: 14,000+ lbs

2020 F-250 (gasoline)
Max payload: 4,260 lbs
Max tow rating: 19,500 lbs

2020 F-250 (diesel)
Max payload: 3,940 lbs
Max tow rating: 22,800 lbs

2020 Ram 2500 (gasoline)
Max payload: 4,050 lbs
Max tow rating: 19,780 lbs

2020 Silverado 2500HD (gasoline)
Max payload: 3,979 lbs
Max tow rating: 14,500 lbs

2020 Silverado 2500HD (diesel)
Max payload: 3,715 lbs
Max tow rating: 18,500 lbs

Classification GVWR Example
Class 1 0 – 6,000 lbs Toyota Tacoma
Class 2a 6,001 – 8,500 lbs Ford F-150
Class 2b 8,501 – 10,000 lbs Ram HD 2500
Class 3 10,001 – 14,000 lbs Chevy HD 3500
Class 4 14,001 – 16,000 lbs Ford F-450 Chassis
Class 5 16,001 – 19,500 lbs Chevy HD 5500
Class 6 19,501 – 26,000 lbs Ford F-650
Class 7 26,001 – 33,000 lbs Ford F-750
Class 8 33,001+ lbs Semi truck

Disappointing, I really expected him to deliver on making it around 6,000 lbs.

Edit: I was taken in, not realizing it was GVWR. So what was expected all along. Okay.

I thought I read somewhere or watched a video that this may be a good thing and get around some regulations. I'll look around and see if I can find it.

As long as all three models weigh over 6000 pounds then all cybertruck models will qualify for the Section 179 IRS code tax credit of $25,000 up front in Year One for all small businesses or larger businesses. The remainder of the depreciation can all be taken in Year One. Do your research on Section 179 of IRS code there are many websites that talk about it. Often referred to as the Hummer tax loophole.

Another thing you must remember are those "max payloads" for those regular 3/4 ton trucks are completely stripped small cab models.

Once you get a mega cab and all the goodies added in, the payloads are sometimes HALF of what those max numbers are.

I had a suburban 3/4 T with 6.5 turbo-diesel and a sierra with same spec… So, I was very satisfied with those trucks… except the cost of replacement of the fuel injection pump at each 60,000 miles… very costly… I hope to get the same satisfaction with the new cybertruck...
that I ordered one 3 motors for Québec and another one motor for our home in Fl...!!!

This information does make me think the battery size will be bigger than expected.

While the info you provided is very interesting, seeing where you live was a real shock! (Neighbor)

In the presentation Elon mentioned they kept it within the same dimensions as the F150 including weight. That really surprised me. This seems more appropriate, but also impressive with the range figures they expect to get.

I know this is specific to me, but the Cybertruck is much more about size and feature than towing/load. So ignoring the weight, load, and tow, the base model F250 crewcab starts at 39k. This is without literally any other change. So to get ALL the other modernized features of a Tesla plus a premium interior at the same price is still incredible in my opinion.

Don't you think, like the M3, that a premium interior in the Cybertruck will be an "adder" to the base price - come configuration time? I do.

"The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers. The term is used for motor vehicles and trains." (Wikipedia).

So this weight includes the vault cargo 3500lbs? If that's true then empty weight could still be within 6000lbs.

Absolutely.
Sorry, I probably shouldn't have used the term "premium" as that is what I imagine they'll be calling that option in the configuration. What I was referring to is that even the base model of Teslas have leather and classy AF interiors.
