View out of Rear Window

So, i hopped on the train and reserved a Dual and Tri motor (will decide later which to get) with FSD. I just got a Model 3 LR AWD in March but decided I can replace my beater 98 S10 and my Model 3 with a Cybertruck before my S10 craps out (gotta have a truck around the house).

So as I'm looking at this ... how does viewing out the rear window work? From what i can tell if the "vault" is closed, the rear window is worthless. Is it going to be SOLELY camera based? It appears if you have the cover open, you can see out, but I'd venture you'd want to drive most of the time with it closed. Am I missing something here?

The rear view “mirror” is a camera. Tonneau cover opened or closed won’t matter to your view as the camera won’t care. Welcome to the club.

I chose Trimotor for the range, towing capacity and figure this will be my splurge vehicle (never got my convertible) so I may as well enjoy the ride to the maximum.

Gotcha. So is it a dedicated rear view mirror? I haven't seen that in any pictures. If so that would be really cool if it was a mirror that was set up as a camera.

If you watch the original unveiling they gave rides in it afterward and specifically talked about the rear view ‘mirror’. It appears to be a dedicated monitor. They also talked about the view through the rear window as being good.

Definitely recommend watching some of the ride alongs from the event, on YouTube. It will give you some perspective. As others have said, it’s a dedicated feed from the rear cameras, and will help when the vault cover is closed, but also give a consistent feed regardless.

I will say, after owning a Model 3 for 18 months, that the view out of the rearview on Model 3 is limited..and that’s putting it nicely. I typically pull up the cameras on the main screen, and that’s very helpful. Yes, it detracts from your view of the map, and other items on the screen, but is a great option for a quick “spot check”. I’d be interested to see if they adopt the full screen reareview cameras on the CT screen. Elon suggested there would be a surround view type option coming for other models.

Right? It isn’t that useful to have to pull the cameras up on the screen. This dedicated viewer should vastly improve visibility. Nothing like driving your Model 3 and thinking everyone is riding your butt.

The Chevy Bolt has a cool setup. The rear view mirror works like a regular one, until you flip the lever at the bottom. Then it’s a camera monitor. Useful and practical. Works well if your view through the rear window is obstructed.

It would not be a good idea to have side views in the rearview display (in the rearview mirror location). You need a good, wide, large view looking back. I like the way the Honda did its experimental side view monitors as part of the dash, and would like to see the side view monitors (if Tesla gets the go ahead to use them in lieu of regular side mirrors) close to the location where you would look for traditional side view mirrors (and of course be 'positionable' for the driver's eye position).

I almost never use the rearview mirror on my Bolt. The camera almost eliminates blind spots completely. It takes a few days to get used to seeing everything behind you in every lane. All vehicles should offer this.I tend to

I tend to use the mirror. I have presbyopia, and I find that my eyes have to adjust when using the camera, but not when using the mirror.

We have a Model 3 and those side views, at least while backing up, are precious, but I wouldn’t want to look down while driving. So mirror or monitor I want it where it has always been, and I want it to auto adjust to glare, nighttime, viewing angle of driver, etc.
