Does tHis imply that Texas relented and will allow Tesla to sell cars in Texas?

I bet this was part of the negotiations. If not, continuing to dis-allow sales in the state while Tesla is building vehicles there would be asinine, and a major black mark on the claim that Texas is a business friendly state.

Otherwise this is great news!! That means that both companies that sell stainless steel vehicles will be in the same state. Tesla in in the Austin area and DMC in Humble (Houston).

I'll definitely attempt to take delivery of my Cybertruck at the factory. That way I can make a vacation out of it. I can possibly tour the Tesla factory (and maybe see mine coming off the line), then drive it to Humble to visit The DeLorean Motor Company.

Assuming this is done in real time and not Tesla time and assuming groundbreaking in June, that means 6 months to model Y and if I were being optimistic then another 6 months to Cybertruck.

They'll need to road test for a few months, but maybe we'll see consumer CTs mid to late 2021, as planned.

The model Y will be assembled in Texas at first. They can do that with tents. The actual manufacturing will still be done at the Freemont plant till they get more of the Gigafactory completed. The Cybertruck can't be built at Freemont as the process is so different. No, it'll be next Fall before we see them start popping out of there.

So Elon Musk will be using Model Y production at 4 different places to fund the Gigafactory 5/Terafactory 1 build. That’s a good way to beat dollar inflation. It’s better than running up long term debt.

Like I suggested, Texas state governor simply cannot make a rule that they will allow direct sales without some form of legislative approval. All he could promise Elon is that he would try his best to pass the laws. Now there is also the question of potential lawsuits from dealership lobby and oil mafia. I believe even if Tesla manages to start production and ramp it up quickly, it might take a few years for the government to warm up to the presence of Tesla. I’m sure public perception of Tesla may become positive overnight and that will make the senators think about it too.

All he could promise Elon is that he would try his best to pass the laws. Now there is also the question of potential lawsuits from dealership lobby and oil mafia. I believe even if Tesla manages to start production and ramp it up quickly, it might take a few years for the government to warm up to the presence of Tesla. I’m sure public perception of Tesla may become positive overnight and that will make the senators think about it too.

It’s not that hard for Texas politicians to have discussions and “count votes”, even when they are out of session. I’m willing to bet that the votes are there to support direct sales. This will easily have bilateral support. I fully expect there were some unofficial handshake promises made to Tesla.

But the counterpoint is that the opposite camp will have already anticipated these moves and made their candidates stronger (plush with cash and other promises).
Eventually at some point public will realize which one is more important for their future and then candidates will have to listen to them anyway. In any case I hope it works out in favor of Tesla as soon as possible.
