No FSD license transfer from current owners :-(

Elon Musk just announced that there will be no way for current FSD owners to have their license moved to new purchases. For me that means that we will not be upgrading our Model 3 to a Model Y even though we want to. We paid for FSD at $6K on the Model 3 and to lose the difference, or worse, to get FSD on the Model Y is simply not in the cards. I think that Tesla is making a huge mistake, and as they continue to increase the price of FSD this mistake will manifest itself in fewer and fewer purchases buying FSD. I am certainly one.

I think long term Tesla wants everyone on a subscription for FSD. Early adopters who plunked down money for FSD will get the benefit of not having to pay the subscription fee... if they still have the car.

Yes that is the current situation. But there are a number of gotchas with this convention. The request to have FSD move with the driver was an attempt to address those issues.

Tesla has a history of wiping it off the car and making people buy it again, but if it stays with the car then we should get the current value of FSD (e.g., right now, $10K) on sale or trade in. Such is not happening from what I see in the forums.

I don't understand how a subscription can work but a license for FSD cannot transfer... You simply tie the VIN (or whatever authenticates the vehicle) to a user or owner name. They login in one time via the Tesla screen to validate their credentials and pair the two together. When the owner sells the vehicle, the same is done to uncouple the paired set. If Elon believed every time someone said that it "can't be done" when he was told something he would not be where he is today. He was told the "Paypal" vision could not be done by competing with the credit card industry. He was told electric vehicles could not be done in competing with the ICE industry. He was told SpaceX cannot compete with a government funded equivalent. Its sort of his "signature thing" to do what other say "can't be done".

Maybe the people in China are smarter...... only 2% buy FSD.

They wait until it is actually driving the car, on it's own, and road legal.

I am still holding FSD on the ordered CTs, but if it is not FULL self driving by time of delivery (2023?) the orders will be "downsized".
If there is no ride share service by then (even with a mandated human backup driver) some orders will be canceled.

The trade in problems with FSD valuation are TESLAs way of telling you to sell the car some where else. They rather only sell new cars.

He didn’t say it couldn’t be done. He said they aren’t doing it. Intentional.

That is the problem with buying FSD. We bought it for our Model 3 and it doesn’t even exist. So we are supposed to keep paying for something that doesn’t exist? Screw that. Give me the value I paid for it. After all, since I haven’t used it, it’s brand new!
