The first Gigafactory in Italy, dedicated to the mass production of batteries, will also be larger in Europe (and the twelfth in the world in size), with an area of about 300 thousand square meters and an initial capacity of 45 GWh, which can reach 70 GWh. It will be realized by Italvolt, founded and led by Lars Carlstrom, an automotive industrialist with over 30 years of experience behind him, former founder and shareholder of Britishvolt.

The employment impact of the factory will be very important: about 4,000 workers employed in the plant and, in total, 10,000 new jobs created. The investment, one of the largest in recent years in Italy, will amount to about 4 billion euros, with the first phase of the project that could be completed by spring 2024.

"With the project of our Gigafactory, Italvolt wants to give an important response to the historic opportunity of green industrialization, which is affecting all production sectors in a transversal way, with a socio-economic impact that will represent a turning point for the global economy", explains Lars Carlstrom, CEO and founder of Italvolt in an official note: "An opportunity, that of "green transition" at an industrial level, which I have always been passionate about and through the launch of Italvolt this passion will become a reality.

I strongly believe that our team of highly qualified engineers and technicians will be able to produce the most environmentally friendly batteries not only in Europe, but all over the world. Our goal is to secure the future of the automotive industry and ensure that the supply chain is as green as possible, from start to finish. The socio-economic impact that the new green industrialization brings with it will represent a turning point for the world".

The new plant, whose final location has not yet been decided, will respond to the growing demand for batteries in Europe, largely from the automotive industry, which by 2030 will increase globally by 17 times to about 3,600 gigawatts (GWh), with a european Union demand forecast of 565 GWh (behind Only China, with an expected requirement of 1,548 GWh).

The architecture of this Gigafactory will be signed by Pininfarina and the complex will be conceived with an eye for the environmental and social impact, with the complex integrated into the economic and social dynamics of the territory that will host it. While to provide innovative solutions, plants and technologies will be another Italian excellence, Comau, which will also take care of the realization of the Research and Development laboratory that will welcome academics and industrial partners engaged in the development of the most advanced technologies in the field of electric mobility.

The Italian gigafactory will take place in the area of the former Olivetti di Scarmano. Italuvolt has chosen the historic site to carry out the first plant in our country dedicated to the production and storage of lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles.

The first phase of the project, which provides for a total investment of around 4 billion euros, will be completed by spring 2024. The former Olivetti area of Scarmagno, owned by the Monteverdi fund managed by Prelios SGR, was selected by Italolt for the Its technical features and for its particularly favorable geographical location. The site is today a vast disused industrial area that extends for about 1 million square meters, already chosen at the time of olivetti by architects Marco Zanuso and Eduardo Vittoria for the ease of road, motorway and rail connections, both with Ivrea and with the City of Turin.

Another factor that makes the area of SCARMAGNO ideal to host the ITALVOLT project is its strong link with the production fabric of Piedmont which is the first region in Italy with regard to automotive industrial production. Italuvolt GigaFactory, with 300,000 square meters expected and an initial capacity of 45 GWh, which can reach 70 GWh, represents an important opportunity for economic-industrial relaunch of the Scarmagno area, with a significant impact even at regional level.

In fact, it is estimated that about 4,000 workers will be used in the plant, with an induced that overall it will be able to create up to 15,000 new jobs. The new plant, which will be able to respond to the growing demand for batteries in Europe, destined to increase globally 17 times up to about 3,600 Gigawatts (GWH) by 20301, will be designed by Pininfarina's architecture division, Ment Comau, Leader in industrial automation will be the supplier of innovative solutions, installations and technologies for the new system dedicated to batteries for the-and-car batteries.

INDUSTRY AND FINANCE Italvolt, 2000
The "gigafactory" will be born in a former Olivetti pole on the outskirts of Ivrea

Piedmont will host what is already called the largest "gigafactory" in Europe. Italvolt,a startup founded by Swedish entrepreneur Lars Carlstrom, has in fact chosen a former industrial area on the outskirts of Ivrea to build a plant dedicated to the production and storage of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

The reasons for the choice. The company led by Carlstrom, a former reference shareholder of Britishvolt, has chosen, in particular, olivetti's former industrial hub in Scarmagno. The area, currently owned by the Monteverdi Fund managed by Prelios SGR (a real estate company born from a Pirelli rib), has been selected for "its technical characteristics and its particularly favorable geographical location".

It is, in fact, a vast industrial area of about one million square meters, which has undergone a progressive degradation since about 20 years ago in conjunction with the gradual abandonment of the production of personal computers: from the end of the 60s and until 1996, it was the headquarters of olivetti's PC division, as well as a production center able to provide work for over seven thousand workers, employees and technicians. Scarmagno, like what was decided at the time of Olivetti by the architects Marco Zanuso and Eduardo Vittoria, was chosen for the comfortable road, motorway and rail connections it has, both with Ivrea and with the city of Turin: the first municipality is about 10 kilometers away, the Piedmontese capital just over 40 kilometers away.

The strength of Piedmont. "Another factor that makes the Scarmagno area ideal to host the Italvolt project is its strong link with the productive fabric of Piedmont, which is the first region in Italy with regard to industrial automotive production", added Italvolt, explaining the reasons that led it to prefer the northern region in a shortlist that also included Campania and Calabria.

"The support of the Piedmont Region, local administrations and trade associations - continues Carlstrom - has exceeded our expectations, the intense and fruitful collaboration of the last eight months has been decisive for our decision. We are particularly excited to be able to start our project in Piedmont, where we have found the perfect combination of the factors that I believe are necessary to better seize the opportunity of green industrialization: a solid industrial tradition and highly specialized technological know-how precisely in the automotive industry.

Finally, we are honored to have the opportunity to build our Gigafactory in the Scarmagno area, once occupied by the Olivetti industrial hub, a company that has marked the history of Italian industry and that still represents an icon of Made in Italy technology".

The project. The gigafactory project foresees a total investment of about four billion euros and the completion of a first phase of development by spring 2024. The plant will occupy about 300 thousand square meters and will be characterized by an initial capacity of 45 GWh, which can be increased up to 70 GWh.

The employment impact represents an important opportunity for economic recovery not only for Scarmagno, but also for the entire area that goes from Canavese to the regional capital. In fact, the plant will directly occupy four thousand people, but the entire related sector will have up to 15 thousand new jobs. Designed to meet european demand for batteries seen to be growing strongly in the coming years, the new facility will be designed by Pininfarina's Architecturedivision - already operational on similar projects since britishvolt's in Blyth, northern England. Another Piedmontese company, Comau of the Stellantis group, willprovide industrial solutions, plants and technologies and will take care of the realization of the Research and Development laboratory.

The Gigafactory employs 7,000 workers itself, and those workers then generate probably another 10K jobs.

Sorry about the whiny article. Housing crisis? Yes, when you create jobs, you then need to house the workers. Geez. How is that a housing crisis?

But the Gigafactory in Nevada does not just make batteries, it also makes motors, gear reduction box, modules, and packs.

I assume the new process, with its highly automated 'bottle' process for the 4680.

All this plant is supposed to do is make cells?

And are these other jobs like the suppliers, restaurant, etc that would increase to support these jobs?
