Interior Side View Camera Screen Spotted?!

Spotted this in the Cybertruck feature by Jay Leno on CNBC.

Is this possibly the side view camera screen with a black cover over it, or is it only a door speaker?

Edit: they could be covering the side view camera screen for now, pending federal approval to launch the Cybertruck without traditional side mirrors.

I think with the minimalist design of the interior the side views will appear on the centre screen when the directional signal is turned on. This will save cost by not having additional screens on the doors.

That's simply not possible. The side view displays have to be visible at ALL times while driving. And putting 2 video images on the center display 100% of the time would leave you with very little screen space for any other functions, which on the CT is all of the functions.

Looks like Model 3 is getting some side camera love on Reverse. So, it may be possible to have this managed through the center screen, or a setting. Will everyone like it, maybe not, but at least in my area, side mirrors are only required without Rearview visibility. Tesla implementing a video rearview could address this, by having a trailer mounted camera accessory similar to GM’s “invisible trailer” feature. I do understand each state has their own laws, and NHSTA sets the standard, but it does appear they’re warming up to the idea.

Looks like Model 3 is getting some side camera love on Reverse. So, it may be possible to have this managed through the center screen, or a setting. Will everyone like it, maybe not, but at least in my area, side mirrors are only required without Rearview visibility. I still don't think it's possible. Yes, there is an option to bring up this view, but you couldn't have this view up all the time. How would you change the heat settings or the radio or check the map? A Model 3 also has side mirrors, so it's ok to bring up this view whenever you want, but the prototype CT does not have that option.

I personally would want side mirrors. I am so used to checking my side mirror then looking behind me to make sure it’s clear prior to making a turn or lane change.
Not sure at my age I could break this habit.
Besides, it’s almost one fluid motion.
If I have to look at the center screen the look for clearance seems like wasted motion to me.
Just my humble opinion after 50 years or driving to include 28 years of pushing a patrol car around. ?
Thank God I don’t do that anymore.

The thing about side mirrors is they are a major contributor to both road noise and aero drag...at least big tow mirrors are. Plus, mirrors are the thing that gets wacked on tight trails, are a pain to clean bugs and mud from, etc. I'm hoping that the CT thinks outside the box and gives us something other than the traditional when it comes to spacial awareness around our vehicle and whatever we tow.

I understand we all have 20, 30, 40, or 50+ years of how we drive to re-learn if they do something other than side mirrors, but I'm willing to try something different to reap the benefits.

If you think relearning how to drive with something other than side mirrors is going to be hard, think of the up hill battle trying to get used to that giant IPAD in the center of the dash! At 75 when I get my CT I’m going to give it one hell of a try. If I can’t, I’ll fall back on FSD.

My Father is 71, and while initially he had some trouble driving my Model 3, he ended up saying that it wasn’t too difficult to get used to.

It takes a little time, but a quick glance over a few degrees is similar to looking down a few degrees. I find myself using cruise most of the time anyways, and you’ll appreciate the extra information you have on the screen. Like, checking your blind spots and verifying with a 3D model of your surroundings on the screen. HUD would be great too, but unlikely.

Have you gone for a test drive in a 3?

I am hoping no side mirrors but I think screens on the inside of the doors would be best for this feature.
But I would get used to it on the pad or better on the sides of the rear view mirror maybe?

When side mirrors were invented there wasn't any other way to look backwards. With a multi-camera system it also might mean looking in one direction and seeing everything. Its the Cyber Way

Side mirrors will most likely be integrated into the rear view mirror screen. Always on and you can see all of the traffic behind and to the side of you at once, which also avoids complications from last second overtakes from behind.

Technically the rear view mirror should also include augmentation like blind spot detection etc and maybe the stereoscopic cameras can do warnings for people who are driving to close behind or are going to rear end you. I'd also imagine they'd be useful for autopilot control to reverse trailers.

I took a close look at the Cadillac Lyriq and I noticed that it also lacks traditional side mirrors. It has very stylish camera stalks.

Granted, it’s an early prototype/concept, but if that design element is legitimate having GM on board for this could be huge.
