Could be a display, but I think it’s more likely to be a tweeter. Center display is where I imagine they’d put the side mirror image, when the turn signal is activated. May also be activated at any time also through the display.

Today with the Model 3, I check my blind spots manually, and then check the center display for the 3D render of cars and lanes around you. I believe this will be similar behavior driving the CT.

That's simply not possible. The side view displays have to be visible at ALL times while driving. And putting 2 video images on the center display 100% of the time would leave you with very little screen space for any other functions, which on the CT is all of the functions.

I hope not, that would eat up most of the screen real-estate. You need to always have the side mirrors visible, not just when you have a turn signal on imo. They are not just for turning, they are for awareness. Each mirror would need to take up at least a 1/4th of the screen to be usable, so they would take up a lot of screen real-estate.

Here is an interesting article from the NHTSA of initial testing of a prototype Camera Monitor System from Oct 2018 to see if they should consider updating the rules. As of 2019 they are considering updating the rules, so this document may be one of the reason why they moved forward to consider it. The document shows that the mirrors need to be capable of a lot more then being useful for turning and the prototype system uses screens built into each door.

I don't think that is a screen. If you look at the image from a test ride, you can see how narrow it is

But it would be the perfect place for a mirror screen like this, or maybe even a larger one.
Then you could have images from both a side view and a forward looking camera that could eliminate that big blindspot that the wide A-pillar creates.

Spotted this in the Cybertruck feature by Jay Leno on CNBC.

Is this possibly the side view camera screen with a black cover over it, or is it only a door speaker?

Edit: they could be covering the side view camera screen for now, pending federal approval to launch the Cybertruck without traditional side mirrors.

Agree... tweeter. Tesla is so determined to simplify, they (re)moved the driver console display to the center screen. There is no way they would ruin their super simple aesthetic putting in more displays. That would also add complications to design, wiring and software.
Also, I like the idea of low position of the side cameras. Better perspective when going slow in technical offroading.

BTW, interesting to see a close up of the glass and jam. Not too thick and interesting mechanical details.

One of my biggest worries about the CT is the driver position and sill height. I can't stand trucks where the sill is really high and you can't see lean out to see the front wheels. That's *almost* a no-go for me. Can't wait to sit in mine and try it out :)

So if/when the screen is eventually given the all-clear to be implemented, I can't help but think of some inherent possibilities! Have the screen display the speed and the distance of the (relevant) vehicle in focus when your indicator is engaged for either side.
Perhaps I should take further liberty here while I'm at it, and postulate that, upon flicking the turn signal, the screen confirms if it is safe (or not) to proceed with the maneuver whenever there isn't any driver assist (AP, FSD) engaged? May be another notch up the safety rating, and possibly save lives when humans (inebriated ones and those that drive like they are) are in control.

The thing I don't get is that glass just fore of the screen/tweeter at the corner of the a-pillar. From the outside it looks nice enough, but it looks like you get basically zero useful visibility from it on the driver's side. The picture here is taken from a better angle than even the driver would have and it's a super small amount of visibility through that triangle. Maybe this is where a screen for side view could be placed? Other than that, I still say maybe the rear-view screen would be divided into a rear view bordered by the side views display if they don't put the side view on the main display in the center.

Size of screen potentially looks like the size of some common mirrors - depending on the lens used you should be able to see most things and if it's connected to the AI then it could easily highlight smaller obstacles/ vehicles like motor bikes, making it safer for road users (yes, I would like a couple of dollars for each car produced that has this function into the future). I hope you can adjust camera to focus on where the rear wheels are positioned (and side of truck) while going in reverse or during an 'off road mode'.
