If there are no stalks, how do we put this car into forward or reverse gear.
Using touch screens,...?.surely that cannot be true.
Well, you never know how Elon's brain works. :D
touch screen wouldn't be a problem IMO. We use the security PIN in the M3 so it wouldn't be a big deal to touch D or R. It's one of the controls that 's not required once you're moving anyway.

Tesla Patent. Guessing it will be similar.
Personally, I'd be ok witht his. Looks cool and probably smart enough to know whether I accidentally press a button while driving...I hope. :)

Electrek has a different take, though.

Tesla writes in the document:

“The vehicle uses its Autopilot sensors to intelligently and automatically determine intended drive modes and select them. For example, if the front of Model S/X is facing a garage wall, it will detect this and automatically shift to Reverse once the driver presses the brake pedal. This eliminates one more step for the drivers of the world’s most intelligent production cars.”
That’s quite a change in the way to operate a car, but Tesla is making sure that people are not too confused about it by adding force touch controls for “Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive’ drive modes at the base of the phone charger on the center console.

I love the updated S. I'm hoping much of this makes it to the CyberTruck...steering wheel, rear-seat screen? It really looks like Tesla is getting better and better at manufacturing which gives me great hope for CT.

I think the stalkless design is pretty cool. But maybe not so great for me when parallel parking. When I go all Austin Powers with it to inch closer to the curb.

I wasn’t so sure about the new yoke, but I drove today only using the sides and bottom of the steering wheel and it wasn’t an issue. Now I’m down with this and hope it makes the CT. I really like the controls on the yoke as well replacing the stalk. I’m all in!

I wasn’t so sure about the new yoke, but I drove today only using the sides and bottom of the steering wheel and it wasn’t an issue. Now I’m down with this and hope it makes the CT. I really like the controls on the yoke as well replacing the stalk. I’m all in!
It’s one of those weird things that’ll be total non issue to some, and a perpetual nuisance to others. When I drive down the highway in my car, I hold the wheel in exactly the same way you’d hold that steering yoke. When I drive my truck, I hold the top of the wheel. It’s all about what’s most comfortable in a particular vehicle. Everything from wheel position, arm rest location, driver height, etc. comes into play as to what’s comfy and what feels awkward. It’s not any big deal to me, just annoying that Tesla chose looking “futurey” over being more flexible on ergonomics.

We do know CT will be better than people know.... perhaps thats speed sensitive 4 wheel steering. We do know it has a brand new suspension.

In my neck of the woods you often see driverless cars passing by. Closer inspection reveals that it is not running on FSD. There is actually a driver with seat reclined to the max to the point you don’t see a head but you can always see a hand on top of the steering wheel. I think this is going to be a deal breaker for those guys.

I'm glad S and X has a steering yoke now and am hopeful that CT will have one too. I'm surprised about non-AI gear selection. FMVSS specs call for PRND to be electro-mechanically actuated. I don't have a full understanding of what that means in this context but either the S/X solution via touchscreen is satisfying that requirement or the rules have changed.

To the 12 O'clock one-handers, looks like you'll have to learn to how to drive properly now. :D

Not really a fan of this design. I'm a "top of the wheel" driver when I'm driving, when in autopilot I rest my hand on my left leg and just grab the lower left of the wheel to keep AP happy. This removes both of those positions.
