In the Portland area I regularly see Model 3s listed for sale at or above the cost I could buy it for new. I’m not buying the “worse depreciation than a BMW” narrative.

But I do plan to sell my Model Y in 2022, so I will find out first hand.

Getting some depreciation because they've met demand at the price will get more people into BEVs.

Most people can't afford them yet and Tesla's goal is to make the affordable.

Yeah my Buddy paid less for his new M3P than a similar used one with over ~5K miles.. blows my mind

Pretty much every vehicle will depreciate in value the second you take possession of it. Tesla is no exception. For example I purchased a lease returned vehicle which was only around 8 months old, it was roughly 55% of the new price of an identical vehicle. Teslas as far as I can tell keep their value quite well.

The Cybertruck met my goals for last vehicle I need to buy criteria when I saw the stainless design on that November opening weekend. I ordered immediately and am still like 150k in line. Depreciation means nothing to me when I have no plans to sell. The frame design is so much more likely to last over any current vehicles that it could last for more than a lifetime assuming battery replacements. I hope they can work out the FSD to be real but only using cameras is harder than systems that combine lidar/radar into the system. We are still in the infancy of self-driving. I anticipate someday these years will be looked as the primitive era before a networked system linking cars and traffic systems together for true FSD function.

I reserved a tri motor CT as the site went live, but the longer I own a Tesla the more I dislike the companies practices.

I purchased a 2019 model M3 med range in February of 2019. The next month they discontinued it. Huge depreciation. Now with updates (the SR battery now has a longer range), new upgrades/features and price drops to LR and SR models my MR has depreciated over $20000 in value. Its even listed in KBB as the cheapest.

Will this behavior continue with CT? Should early adopters of their new Truck be put through this same bullshit.

I get tech improves. But the worst thing they can do is drop the prices. Just come out with a lower end model.
Cancel your Cybertruck reservation immediately! The terrible products Tesla delivers are only outdone by their terrible business practices. And this is having a terrible effect on the world we live in.

Do not support these disgusting practices by buying a Cybertruck. Cancel now!

Elon believes that the FSD feature alone is a value of 100k so a cybertruck with FSD quickly becomes way more valuable should they ever significantly jack up the price of that feature.

lets say you buy a tri with FSD, youre at about 77k. then they say FSD is a 40k option down the road, you immediately gain value because you paid 7 or 8 for it.

Every vehicle changes technology and features from year to year, why would tesla be any different? Tesla did itself a disservice long term by even entertaining the retroactive updates....any other vehicle you would never even consider this to be a possibnility, but because its Tesla, everyone wants constant feature upgrades to go along with their software....I dont get why people think like this.....

Actually i wonder how much FSD feature will be valued on the CT. For daily commuter vehicles i see value. For trucks, not so much. People use trucks for work, hauling/pulling things, and going offroad (well not everyone but you get the point) I am not sure how FSD fits into any of those scenarios.

Don't get me wrong, i ordered my CT with it lol, but i question the practicality of it. I doubt many CT will be used for Robotaxis for example.

So let's look at towing with FSD, how does the CT know how long the trailer is for merging/lane changes? How about stopping distance with the extra mass and velocity?

Offroading....FSD may as well be non existent here lol

Wait, FSD does not transfer with the vehicle? Where does it go?

i think it will be very valuable for towing.....the computer can overcome many hazards/shortcomings when towing, swaying, turn radius, overloading, even acceleration, and appropriate braking

With seating capacity at 6 and a huge vault it has the potential to pick up travelers and all their luggage.

1. If anyone wants to swap me their early CT reservation as a result of depreciation or build quality worries, Let me know. I'd gladly move up in line.

2. I think it's fair to say that Tesla will continue to lower prices as their capacity to reduce costs grows. This is a reality that you'll have to wrestle with as you contemplate 'when to buy'.

3. The question you have to ask is how your tesla is depreciating RELATIVE to the rest of the market. It strikes me that outside of the FSD thing (which I think should change and should follow the vehicle but that's another topic) that Teslas in general are/will depreciate more slowly than the rest of the market.

Everytime tesla lowers the price on their vehicles, it's a defacto depreciation hit to EVERY vehicle in it's class. That means that Even if the CT drops in price by 5k in the first year, it will not only lower the residual value of every CT, but also every other truck in it's class. Eventually that will include ICE trucks as well. It's going to be a race to the bottom and I think that will mean that the CT will still be the best value when everything is said and done.

Since I'm thinking my CT will be the last truck I ever buy, I'm not really worrying about this.

If it followed the vehicle and FSD increases in cost down the road, a strange appreciation could occur making demand for used CT's of higher value than New ones. =)

I can't imagine that this would be a situation that Tesla wants to create for itself. As mentioned before, I think it should just be tied to the owner and then be allowed to be paired with a Tesla registered to that owner assuming said vehicle has FSD capabilities. Should a owner own multiple Tesla's, each one should have its own paid for FSD license assuming the owner wants that feature on each of those vehicles at the same time.

It's software for hardware the owner already has purchased. Would make the most sense if it was treated as such.

Current pay structure really sorta sucks. Lots of questions such as does an insurance company reimburse the costs of FSD if your vehicle is totaled in a collision? Do they reimburse the cost with appreciation or depreciation if the cost of FSD goes up from when you currently purchased it? If you own the vehicle for 1 year and fall on some sort of economic woes that force you to sell the vehicle are you just completely out the monies paid for FSD even though you repurchase another Tesla a year later when your financial situation is improved?

Who's to say that there may be a battery upgrade available?
