Honestly most trucks and SUVs with running boards do not need them. They are mainly for looks.

Running boards are unnecessary, but they do have utility.

The previous owner put them on my GMC Sierra Hybrid, and then running boards are probably the reason the left side of the driver's seat isn't worn through, the way it is on most high-mileage GM pickups with leather seats.

The unnecessary running board is mostly a step for getting in and out of the truck. I've made a habit of using it, in order to preserve the seat. They may have been put on the vehicle for the chrome, but they are telling to preserve the interior. Thanks, previous owner!

The kneeling suspension on the CT may make this unnecessary.

P.S .Almost nobody replaces worn out seats in old GM pickup trucks. They just sell the truck to someone who doesn't care how the interior looks, instead, and that person puts crappy looking seat covers in it. The CT will be a long-term buy for me, so hopefully Tesla will sell me a reasonably priced interior upgrade when my CT's seats wear out after 10-15 years of daily use.

I think running boards could be good for those who could benefit from an extra step. I like the unveiling video when the Cybertruck came up on stage and people got out. No one seemed to have any trouble at all, at most they just needed to fully extend their leg. I am a tall guy so I probably wouldn't even consider it for me, but my girlfriend is like 5' so she might want one...but I probably still won't install it.

Also a little off topic but I kind of hope when I park and walk away, that I can set the Cybertruck to raise the suspension to the max automatically. People will probably be impressed by Cybertruck for years just like people are still spotted on sentrycam to be looking all over a Tesla. I don't want them easily peering through my window and annoying my dog when I have dog mode on.
