No side mirror = no tow mirror

Yes, I have. In fact I used to joke that you can always tell a Tesla owner by the calluses on each of his thumbs (to reboot you press both thumbwheels on the steering wheel). But this stopped happening with later software releases. It has not happened at all (touch wood) with the latest Tesla which I have had since March.

I want five nines. I don't care if this comes from belt and suspenders or a belt that has got all five or a pair of suspenders that has got all five.

Now imagine your towing and this happens. Oh my... wait a scary problem you would have. This does happen with Tesla vehicles. If you own a Tesla, you know this. Cameras are great, as an ADDED devise. Mirrors are always there and can’t turn off due to a sofeware problem. Safety first.

Backup cameras are great for backing up Your vehicle, but not when the sun is shinning directly on them, or when it’s been raining, or foggy, or muddy. How the heck are you going to drive safely when the cameras don't provide you the basic Visibility?

Sounds like a broken record. Any kind of problem, or noise, while driving any kind of vehicle, especially while towing, can be terrifying. I have heard isolated stories of the Tesla screen shutting down but not affecting the drive ability. If I have a system problem of any kind when I drive I stop immediately and figure out what is going on, and especially if I am towing. The window of opportunity before disaster while towing is very small. All these other issues can be dealt with and would have to be for regulators to approve. I was quite impressed with the link to the Australian semi system.

Have you ever been in a truck that the mirrors came off? Get fogged? Blocked?

This is a thing that happens. No system is perfect.

Heck, riding my motorcycle in the winter there are times I'll be going over the hill and bam, everything is fogged. My visor, my lenses, the plastics of my bike... And you just can't see through mirrors that are fogging up like that.

If you need the mirrors, you have to just stop and wait or put more manpower to the job.

I agree 100%. However, side mirrors have been in trucks since the very beginning. They will continue us to be required. Want to wager?

And unless you break the glass the mirror still works, sometimes low tech gets the job done more reliably. Would people feel comfortable sitting in a CT with NO windscreen, only a flat monitor? Just look at the monitor and drive, sounds easy right, what could go wrong.

I would love a car that had no windshield unless I wanted it, like batmobile armor. The CT exoskeleton is very batmobilish already! Then we ‘really’ wouldn’t need windshield wipers...

Mirrors don't work if they fog up. And a tiny camera is easier keep from fogging than a big outboard mirror.

Mirrors don't work if they get bumped, cameras can be enclosed. Outboard stalks can be broken off, inboard or remote cameras cannot. Mirrors can't correct for angle or lensing, cameras can.

So that means cameras can do lots of things with looking down around and out that mirrors can't do.

I have driven a truck for about 20 years, still tow a trailer and a boat occasionally, and have no idea why you would say that unless you think that all people who drive trucks agree with your position. You are always entitled to your choices, but why are you challenging someone else for theirs? Do unto others ... and all that stuff.

Cameras can see through fog, they can see through clothes, they can see in low light, they can process out bright lights, they can zoom, they can present the view anywhere. Mirrors can get fogged, they can see up skirts, they don't work in low light although they can blind you, they have to be positioned at the point of redirect.
Cameras are way better than mirrors at almost everything. That is why no one is inventing new mirrors and new cameras get designed every day.
I think people are basing their camera experience based on poorly designed added on systems.

I have actually driven a vehicle with no forward window. It had 3d cameras and a 3d screen. It was not a good experience although it was doable. Really had to keep your head in the right position or the 3d screen would lose perspective. However it could be driven in a total black out. No lights.

Yes, that's exactly what it refers to. It wont fail in 99,999 out of 100,000 drives. Note that in the latest earnings call Elon talked about how difficult it is to get those extra 9's that regulators will demand before allowing the higher levels (4 and 5) of autonomy on public roads.

I got the impression that the CT as currently known is probably a few components shy of a production vehicle and some appear to be ugly exterior things like side mirrors and windshield wipers. Wouldn't want to upset the Franz (like telling him to make the CT 5% smaller) but there will be some changes.
For towing, and potentially some of the tech they can share from the tesla semi, cameras and/or other sensors on the trailer could plug into the CT and coordinate with the FSD. Preventing jack-knifing, and allowing the CT to automate backing up etc.
But there could be covered mounting nuts for add on mirrors. Or drill/tap into the exoskeleton. yuck

The late Justin Wilson, chef, and speaking celebrity never took any chances, he always wore suspenders and a belt just to be safe.
