No side mirror = no tow mirror

Oh my goodness. wishing and hoping wont make facts go away. Every car, truck and Semi in the USA has side mirrors, and so will the CT. So does every Tesla on the road. The roadster is a prototype. The Semi is a prototype. The CyberTruck is a prototype. Tesla can preview prototype vehicles all they want, but when it comes time to selling them, they will all conform.

No one, not you, me, or anyone, can say what policy will be in 2 years. We know what the requirements are today and that is all we know.

It doesn’t matter to me either way, but I do not wager in general and definitely not on government policies. I’ll say this though, if Elon Musk believes the policy might change before the CT goes into production I would not bet against him.

The point is the view, not the object 'mirrors'. If a camera has a better view, then why wouldn't it serve the purpose?

It used to be that cars couldn't have more than two filaments for headlamps, and their brightness was limited everywhere instead of guidelines for angle and glare. Center tail lights weren't a thing and then they were. Drum brakes were required and disc brakes weren't allowed. Things change.

I'm sure the truck will be meant to tow (it's in the demo) and they'll figure out a solution.

Cameras are not better. They might add or assist the mirrors but not replace them. Anybody who has towed knows that the mirrors are required for safe driving. When towing you don’t want a camera only system to fail. They don’t work very well at all in the rain, mud, snow and for that matter when the sun is shunning directly on them.

They are required by law and will be installed by Tesla at the factory in the CYbertruck, the Roadster and the Semi and any other vehicle they will make. Just like they do now. Just because they have inquired to the government about cameras doesn’t mean they won’t be required. If by some long shot that Tesla is granted an exception in the mirrors I will still install them for safety reasons.

Your points are right regarding conditions and current law, but the Tesla camera views are without question better than mirrors (which also can be compromised by many of the same conditions you mention) outside those conditions. I do tow occasionally and I agree that to have a compromised system would not be acceptable so I would want redundancy no matter what system is used. If you want mirrors I hope for you that you get them. I have never really liked mirrors and I love the Tesla backup and side view camera views. To ‘me’ they are much better in most driving conditions than any mirrors I have had on any car or other vehicle. I think that the governing bodies will eventually agree though I have no idea when that might be. Given how wide the CT will be I would not want mirrors on my truck unless they retract all the way When I leave the truck. Other than this I think the whole discussion is rather comical.

Although Mercedes Trucks still mount their camera's on side stalks.

Those are great displays. The Tesla cameras are already protected inside a housing, but I really liked that Mercedes-Benz has thought out their system so carefully. Tesla could do the same. Given that this technology has been tested and deployed elsewhere in the world, and is apparently safe and desirable, I wonder why U.S. regulators have been so slow to adopt.

I would love to see Tesla offer a wired option for a trailer camera(s).

If they sold the camera kit you could mount it on trailer, enter length of distance to camera from hitch, height etc. With that info and if they produced the camera they should be able to include those cameras in 3d view. Even if their was a gap in vision/display. Not to mention potential for AI on them.

Ever spend much time hauling cargo with a large trailer? Forward is not the only direction.

Several manufacturers have solutions for this.

At the moment yes but NHTSA is reviewing this regulation. It may go away.

Maybe that air compressor will come in handy in several ways.

Have you ever been driving your Tesla when the software/ electrical system shuts down? Drivers screens shut off, speed limit off, cameras off, nav off, other car detection system off.

Now imagine your towing and this happens. Oh my... wait a scary problem you would have. This does happen with Tesla vehicles. If you own a Tesla, you know this. Cameras are great, as an ADDED devise. Mirrors are always there and can’t turn off due to a sofeware problem. Safety first.

Backup cameras are great for backing up Your vehicle, but not when the sun is shinning directly on them, or when it’s been raining, or foggy, or muddy. How the heck are you going to drive safely when the cameras don't provide you the basic Visibility?
