Tesla looking into steer-by-wire with new development team at Austin

With a complete drive by wire system there's really no way to have it work with no power whatsoever. Aircraft with fly by wire systems have either full backup/parallel systems, or partial failure states (1 instead of 2 control surfaces move for example). I'm sure if they end up putting this system in vehicles at least some jurisdictions will make backup systems mandatory.

With ABS, the ABS systems generally have some sort of backup power.

I assume the same will be true of any other essential.

Throttle-by-wire is old news in the USA. NBD
Drive-by-wire is present too. 2012 VW Sportwagon would flinch its steer approaching the off-camber roadway southbound on the Hwy1 Robin Williams tunnel (Waldo grade). It could not be trusted. Elon’s fully Electric version advances the elec/hydraulics of the present. Tesla should gain redundancies to correct for input error or failover. That should be a watch-for Big News.

FSD gains better responsiveness, Zero-latency and increased Safety factor by redundancy. I like the Tesla engineers moving the systems engineering toward FSD safety.
