In the US, or California at least, a company has to prove that your alteration to their instructions actively caused the damage before they can deny a warranty repair.

So they'd have to prove that the generator did the damage - and that it was unreasonable for you to assume it wouldn't.

I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice. But record everything and talk to a lawyer if a warranty claim gets denied!

Since this popped back up I'll mention that I was looking at Telsa's Powerwall literature and it mentions that they can be used in off grid systems and that they are compatible with any inverter. Now the Powerwall is, in the sense that it accepts AC input and charges a battery, similar to the charger in the cars. But it is also bidirectional in that it can provide AC to the house (or mains in grid connected systems) from the battery. Thus the bridge connected to the mains is active. This doesn't prove anything, of course. Just adds credibility to the common sense interpretation.
