I can just imagine some doctorate student sitting out in the middle of the ocean with a huge mirror off the side of the boat. Waiting for a blue whale to swim by. How long is he going to wait for that data?

Well, they would be for compliance. You'd have better views available in the cabin from the cameras.

Maybe they can have magnetically attached side view mirrors to comply with regulations at the time of sale but have an alternative tech to circumvent those same regulations afterward.

Magnetic will not work! the body is stainless steel!

Until DOT rewrites rules these will be great! With the addition of trailer cameras, mirror extensions would not be needed when towing. Tesla would need to make the mirror camera live on the screen when moving or some form of heads up view.

Tesla is lobbying the NHTSA so the Cybertruck will not have to have side mirrors....or wipers. Not sure how that is progressing. Cybertruck production is still 9 or 10 months away, so it may not have these items. Cameras are safer and give a more complete picture and wipers may be replaced by lasers.

I am betting that CT won’t have a side mirrors but will have windshield wipers. Whether the wiper is a single electromagnetic one as they have patented, a single large wiper or traditional dual wipers is up for debate. I think the laser wiper is way down the time line.

Maybe the reason for the delay of what Tesla’s final design is due to the NHTSA delay in requiring side mirrors.
