Good evening,

I just heard about this Black Stainless steel. Not Painted!
But an actual stainless steel version that comes in black, matt black I think.
From some renders online it looks great.
Does anyone have any info on this? Could Tesla do this without a paint shop?
If so would it cost very much more? Is it just another type of steel?

2022 can't come fast enough.

black steel is an oxide applied to stainless steel. In other words, the finish can be scratched revealing the stainless steel underneath.

Page 7 of the link article above also states the coloring can be removed / damaged and then cannot be repaired.

it may be great for a building exterior or a home appliance finish, but I wouldn't advise for a vehicle. once its scratched it can't be fixed.

I suspect a wrap is the best option here... I wish Tesla would offer factory wraps for all their cars. Volume, being able to do it perhaps during the manufacturing process etc. could make it much cheaper potentially... Going 3rd party after the fact is $$$$... not worth it IMO.

I want the original. It is a DeLorean without the expensive cocaine. It is BlaedeRunner. I would buy the original brushed stainless even if it was an extra cost option.

I have specified liquid salt bath nitriding for a cam. Took 17-4 H1150 SS from Rockwell C30 to C60 (hardness). it is not the prettiest black but made the cam much better. They use a similar process on Glocks.

Elon has said it can be any color you want as long as it wrapped, i still believe there will be only 1 option for color on this vehicle, and thats plain stainless.

Use a hand torch or a flat roofers 20/40 lb propane tank with his torch and create some nifty blueish purple tinges.

It can be done without weakening the metal, one just need s to be good.

When the truck was first announced, I was deadset on black. I still think it would look sweet in a matte black, but I think I'd only want the stainless silver at this point. It's too iconic to pass on. Can you imagine a DeLorean in any other color?

Sounds exotic, but personally I go for glossy black. My Chysler 300C was dubbed the Batmobile by others and more affectionately to me as the "Big Pimp Daddy Wagon". And so I'll take the raw stainless over the matte black.
