Please make this a feature..... automatic vault opening on approach

There is a device made by a third party for the hatchbacks on Teslas which ties into the existing wiring harness and intercepts the contacts on the 'open' button. It mounts under the rear bumber and senses if you put your foot near it. Thus you can approach the vehicle with arms full of groceries and wave your foot about under the bumper and the back opens.

Yes, of course, you are correct. The vault cover stays closed to keep out any rain. (Of course, the thing is going to leak....don't see how Elon can prevent that.) Only the tailgate need open. God, we're spoiled.

When you have a Tesla, you're allowed to get spoiled. Other makers don't like giving more than you bargained for the day after you purchased without selling you a new car, whereas Tesla listens to their customers and pushes out helpful and fun updates for free years after you bought your car!

Man, I love that Tesla is solving first world problems.
